Another image is that of a melancholic, innocent and frightened animal. The aviator hunched in the belly of the plane shows readers how scared and helpless he was in the confined sphere six miles high in freezing temperatures. Abortion comments on the waste of war. The imagery of birth and the womb that Jarrel uses places this theory of innocence in the reader's mind.
