The WolfWe called *Jamie Masterson "Wolf" because when things got crazy, you could expect a long howl in the Virginia woods from Wolf. He did it, to relieve stress. Anyone within earshot could relate to it. We all wanted to scream sometimes. Wolf, myself, Sergeant Bosworth and Claude Von Plueren hung out together after work. To relieve stress, we told stories and drank a few beers. Wolf liked to laugh a lot and admired Sergeant Bosworth. In his early twenties and fresh out of the army, Wolf was tall and thin as a rail. His broken front tooth was his most identifying feature. Wolf and I opened some cell doors together and I respected Wolf for that. On October 16, 1987, Wolf and I were near the bottom of the stairs at 5A and 5B. We shook the inmates as they returned from the main line. The inmates walked in single file, behind a 3 foot railing as they returned to Super Max. A few feet to my left Wolf Pat frisked inmate *Nick Bender. A short, bearded man in his thirties, Bender was the leader of the Aryan Brotherhood gang in Super Max. If Bender gave an order, his soldiers obeyed it. He was the most powerful inmate in Super Max. I turned, just as Bender pointed his finger in Wolf's face. “You better never touch me again!” Wolf looked at me, smiled, and Bender stomped up the upper floor to 5A and 5B and then up to No. 7. Wolf and I followed the line of inmates. On the 7th path, Bender waited for Wolf and faced him again. The rest of the inmates remained in front of their cells, but refused to enter. Wolf had managed to piss off the leader of Super Max's Aryan Brotherhood and had done it in front of his men. I don't think Wolf realized the gravity of the situation. The inmates would do anything Bender told them... middle of paper... entered the penitentiary with pride and confidence. Come get me you sons of bitches!! Try to take me out! My fear and terror prevailed, I was ready for battle. A day or two later, they let Bender out of prison. Without Wolf's report accusing him of assault, they decided to let him go. The whole thing was dropped. Bender hadn't been out of his lair for 24 hours when Batman approached me. “You know they let Nick out!” "I heard it." "Forget what I said. Nobody's crazy anymore." 'Anyway. Now get back in line and get down to rec!' As for Wolf, I never saw him again. I don't know if he was reassigned, put on another shift, or fired. To this day I've never seen or heard from him. Author's Note: A search of Bender shows that is serving a life sentence in the State of Missouri. His original conviction was for assaulting and stabbing a man.
