Patient and family involvement during bedside NKE gives the opportunity to hear what happened during the shift and the next step of the shift assistance. Studies have found that “after implementing bedside shift reporting, hospitals reported increased patient satisfaction scores and improvements in the nurse-patient relationship” (AHRQ, n.d.). Implementing NKE at the bedside is not an easy process. Staff involvement with a multidisciplinary team is necessary in order to monitor and receive feedback during the implementation process. Nursing staff may object to NKE for various reasons. We must recognize and address potential challenges and concerns in order to successfully implement NKE at the bedside. Step-by-step planning, education and training are necessary to encourage nurses to embrace the concept of NKE at the bedside. Nurses must realize that bedside NKE improves quality of care, nurse accountability, and patient satisfaction. It may be useful to implement this strategy initially on a small scale, for example on a single unit. This will help identify what worked well and what didn't.
