College recruiting is something that was created for the good of college sports, but is often used for unethical actions that will make anyone with a soul cringe. In 2004, the University of Colorado athletics department used alcohol, drugs, and sex to lure recruits on official campus visits (Gerdy). These actions are immoral on several levels and should not be tolerated. If this type of behavior continues to be seen in college sports, serious changes need to be made. The illegal recruiting that occurs in NCAA athletics is unethical, gives colleges unfair advantages, and jeopardizes player eligibility. First, illegal recruiting in NCAA athletics is tremendously unethical. “The extremely high stakes of recruiting can sometimes compromise the values coaches must teach: honesty, integrity and loyalty” (Spillane). No matter how high the stakes, there is no reason to set aside all morals and values for the sake of a college sport. Whether it's a low-level recruit or a superstar, everything has to deal with the same principle, which means that if the coach doesn't treat the two recruits equally he's not doing his job well. As expectations for the coach begin to rise and job security decreases, coaches are tempted to go out and reach out to recruits, regardless of the cost (Spillane). While a coach may risk losing his job, it is better to be fired than to give up all of your morals and integrity. If a person has to give up all his morals for any reason, it really shows what kind of person he is. Furthermore, as explained in Angela Lumpkin's Modern Sports Ethics, there may be no moral obligation for a coach or recruiter to make the right choice (66).
