Composer's Report I have chosen to do my own Composer's Report on Florence Price. Florence Price was born on April 9, 1887 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Florence Gulliver and James H. Smith. He had two brothers. Florence gave her first recital at the age of four. He attended the same elementary school as William Grant Still, where they both studied with educator Charlotte Andrews Stephens. Florence Price is considered the first black woman in the United States to be recognized as a symphonic composer. His education is steeped in European tradition, but Price's music is composed primarily of the American idiom and reveals his Southern roots. His mother, a soprano and pianist, carefully guided his early musical education. At the age of fourteen, Price enrolled in the New England Conservatory of Music with a major in piano and organ. He studied composition and counterpoint with George Chadwick and Frederick Converse.
