Naturalism is a literary school born around the end of the 19th century. The main goal of naturalism is to correct the sometimes imprecise use of situational ethics, as well as the emphasis on common or typical events found in realism. “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” by Katherine Anne Porter is an example of naturalism with its use of truth governed by natural laws, a simple narrative structure, and the grandmother's epiphany that death has finally overtaken her. This story is set-up with a simple narrative structure. The entire story is told from Grandma Weatherall's point of view, what is happening to her as she lies in bed, and her memories of her life. The grandmother's narrative tells us the story of her life and the difficulties she faced from losing her husband at an early age, having to raise her children, take care of the house, finances, neighbors and sick "niggers" alone . as if he had been stood up at the altar by George. Using this approach helps the reader understand what life is like for Grandma Weatherall and how she views her life...
