In 2002, the Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize physician-assisted suicide. Additionally, there are criteria that must be met before euthanasia can be performed. These criteria require that the suffering is unbearable, that there is no prospect of improvement, that there are no acceptable alternatives, that a second doctor has been consulted, and that euthanasia must meet the most advanced medical standards (Griffith, 2014). Furthermore, every case of euthanasia must be reported to the Public Prosecutor who will assess whether the criteria are met or not before it can be administered. Many requests for euthanasia come from patients whose lives are described primarily in terms of suffering and who are terminally ill. In the vast majority of cases the physical discomfort that leads to euthanasia consists of constant pain, nausea, dependence on others for total care, dyspnea, extreme tiredness, anxiety, loss of bodily functions, loneliness and
