In 2002, the Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize physician-assisted suicide. Additionally, there are criteria that must be met before euthanasia can be performed. These criteria require that the suffering is unbearable, that there is no prospect of improvement, that there are no acceptable alternatives, that a second doctor has been consulted, and that euthanasia must meet the most advanced medical standards (Griffith, 2014). Furthermore, every case of euthanasia must be reported to the Public Prosecutor who will assess whether the criteria are met or not before it can be administered.
