Topic > The skills of a great journalist - 1246

The stories journalists tell create conversations over dinner with family or an argument at the pub with friends. Without journalism what would we know? It is thanks to journalists that we can know what is happening on the other side of the world, from the comfort of our living room. As journalists we are watchdogs for the public, we represent the absent and answer all their questions. Journalists over time develop their ability to identify what will constitute good news. When researching my news, I struggled to find stories that the public would find interesting. When reporting news, it often falls into categories (Harcup, 2009, P43). This list helped me look at the different categories, which are considered news. However, I needed to develop my skills in finding good news. Some news isn't always new (Harcup, 2009, P44) and finding my story that hadn't already been covered was difficult. I looked for local sources who could provide me with information that had not been released or was of interest to the press. Journalists use sources daily to provide new stories (Harcup, 2009, P60). I felt that contacting a source, such as my local council, would provide me with a story. This decision worked well, the city provided me with a story, which I followed up with an interview with a council member, and reported it in my original story. By also examining Leveson's quote, the press becomes vital in uncovering the stories that need to be reported. While some reported only to fill space, others actually inform the public with information that could benefit themselves or the person the story is about. In our journalism studies we learned what vox pops were and we put them into practice on the street.... .. middle of paper ...... ps re-emerge in the news. Overall, in the first few months of my journalism degree I learned the different characteristics of becoming a journalist. Regarding Leveson's quote, I believe that in some way we speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. With tragedies happening on the seas and wars in the country, I believe this is a true reflection of that quote. However, when it comes to opinions on smaller issues, I believe we only listen to those we are willing to talk to. I think there are many skills in journalism, which will develop over time. This could be, for example, developing a flair for a good story and improving interview techniques over time. Finally, I believe a good journalist is one who uncovers a newsworthy story, but writes it in a way that appeals to all audiences. Not all journalists should be treated the same.
