In a world full of technology, it is difficult to escape the grip of social media as it has been incorporated into our daily lives. We almost instinctively take out our phone in the middle of a boring conversation and look at our Instagram feed without thinking twice. Many of us are guilty of spending unreasonably large amounts of time without even recognizing that it's a problem. What if these small actions lead to a misconception of what society should be? Ultimately, are the risks serious enough to stop the problems? What if social media affected our relationships with others, our votes, and our privacy? In many ways it is. Social media has a negative impact on our generation. “We live in a technological universe where we communicate continuously. Yet we have sacrificed conversation for mere connection.”(Turkle, 1) The rise of social media has negatively affected communication and relationship skills. In our modern world, face-to-face relationships are overlooked, they are obsolete, a skill of the past. Face-to-face communication is being lost due to our devices, social media and the development of new technologies. The concern now is that people prefer to communicate via text over face-to-face conversations. “Coffee dates are a thing of the past; now, if a person wants to get to know someone better, they can simply browse their Facebook profile to find out their interests.” (Loch, 1) When we learn things about people through social media and the Internet, there is no emotional connection. We cannot perceive the tone of their voice, facial expression, or whether the information is true. These things are not present during texting: we cannot tell how things are said and a half...... half of paper ......al devices lead to decline in social skills." University Chronicle.
