As a foreigner growing up in a different country and attending college for the first time in the United States, it was important to create an opportunity to pursue a career in the healthcare profession. Some of the obstacles I faced early in my college career were English as a second language, time management, and working full-time while earning a degree. However, last but most importantly, being a good mother trying to juggle everything. Living in Jamaica and Antigua and Barbuda for much of my academic life presented me with a great challenge when I came to the United States. As an immigrant, my spoken English was not well developed. Being originally from the Caribbean, English is not our primary language and I had little to no practice speaking it. When I spoke with professors and other students I was aware of the fact that I sounded different, that perhaps I had pronounced the wrong words or that perhaps they were not understood.
