Accordingly, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary (2015) communication is “the imparting or exchanging of thoughts, opinions, or information by means of words, writings, or signs.” If the communication chain is broken or has shortcomings, this can lead to misunderstandings and errors that can affect the entire team and especially the patient. In the healthcare sector, different communication methods are used such as written notes and handovers, telephone/fax, noticeboards, e-mail, verbal and body language. However, the most critical information is always written by hand, via email or, in extreme cases, via text message, which can lead to serious penalties in case of errors or miscommunications.
