Pennsylvania's prison system, also known as the segregated system, has been affected by solitary confinement, silence, and harsh discipline. The goal of this model was reform. Prisoners under this system were kept in solitary confinement and their cells were tiny. They were not allowed to come into contact with other prisoners and visits were limited. Prisoners also had their own yards to aid in further isolation. Over time, Pennsylvania's prison system has added prison labor. This model was best for preventing violence in prison and allowing prisoners to use isolation to reflect on their criminal behavior. On the other hand, this became very expensive and the isolation did not have many positive effects on the citizens' souls
