According to authors Perry Haan and Cam Cruickshank, while some school districts are open to homeschooling students participating in extracurricular activities, others are resistant to allowing children to choose which parts of traditional schooling they wish to experience. Parents who choose to homeschool their children pay for their education out of their own pocket. Meanwhile, these same parents continue to pay taxes for the public school system even if they do not use this service. It is my opinion that these children should be able to participate in any aspect of public school, be it classrooms or extracurriculars. If a parent is homeschooling and cannot adequately teach a specific subject, such as a foreign language, there should be an avenue to use the public education system for that subject only. Sports, as well as marching band, social clubs (e.g., French Club, Science Club), and after-school dances, are all extracurricular activities that take place after school and not during class time. Homeschoolers' participation in these groups would not negatively impact the normal school day. Public school officials believe that homeschoolers are socially disadvantaged, yet they are the ones who try to deny these children the opportunity to socialize by participating in lessons and extracurricular activities..
