The popular and growing diffusion of distorted representations of the poor community generated by opinionated and captivating media stories hinders the adherence of informed beliefs to the American population. As time passes, the poor, especially welfare recipients, are made to look less and less like victims and more and more like vengeful criminals stealing from America's growing wealth. Since the 1980s and 1990s, nearly 80% of welfare reform advocates have encouraged the implementation of stricter limitations to discourage scams and fraudulent receipt of assistance (Rose & Baumgartner, 2008).
