This article highlights many of the techniques discussed in the IPE Tegrity lessons. Some interventions used to increase communication skills and provide effective interprofessional communication are SBAR, team meetings, and multidisciplinary rounds using daily goal sheets. To briefly describe them, SBAR is a standardized means for communication in patient situations. It asks these four questions: “What is happening to the patient,” “What is the context or clinical context,” “What do I think the problem is,” and “What do I think needs to be done for the patient” (Dingley, 2008). It is used by all healthcare disciplines, ideally eliminating the hierarchy between the doctor and other disciplines. Team meetings are quick meetings that punctuate the flow of the rest of the day. It is stated in the article that these team meetings result in break-ins during the rest of the day and immediate clarification of issues (Dingley, 2008). They have specific guidelines to make sure they work as effectively as possible.
