Marijuana, or its official term, cannabis, has been around since ancient times and has experienced a resurgence in recent years, especially among high school and college teens. Although the drug has been used since early China, according to the drug education company Narconon International, where it was used as a medicine, marijuana entered the pop culture scene at events like Woodstock, a three-day music festival steeped of hippies in Bethel, New York, who promoted peace and music in 1969 (History of Marijuana). In recent years, marijuana seems to have become more accepted in society. Although recreational use of the drug is still illegal in the United States, it has become common to hear about teenagers experimenting with weed. It seems that teenagers today have an invincibility complex towards drugs and do not fear any of the risks associated with them. According to a 1994 Los Angeles Times article by Rose Apodaca, this is ironically the direct result of the teenagers' parents, who are members of the hippie-Woodstock generation (By Design - Los Angeles Times). Teens see that their parents most likely smoked weed at one time or another and did well, and thus make teens think it's okay to use marijuana and may even consider it a trend. Adolescents are also pushed to use drugs as an act of rebellion, because since we were little, parents and educators have imposed advertising against drugs, alcohol and tobacco on us, trying to instill in us that these substances are harmful and should not be abused. While these messages have valid points, they unintentionally seep into the minds of young people as the first places to turn when rebelling against our superiors.
