Topic > The Importance of Age in Nursing - 1486

Through training and experience nurses must be able to implement various methods to teach the general public how to contrast myths and symptoms of illness. One method to increase awareness of ageism is to involve people in different activities with older adults, such as role-playing, observation, and direct experience with the older generation (Yu and Chen, 2012). Many people believe that future life would be more enjoyable living at home, however observations of older adults living at home versus institutions have shown that they often have to experience this next stage of life alone and this can lead to increased loneliness, impotence and boredom. Blanchard, 2013). This loneliness and lack of social influence can lead to health problems and accelerated death (Blanchard, 2013). Another example of how nurses can become agents of change is to provide the opportunity for role plays. By placing different generations in the other person's perspective a new level of understanding can be achieved. These role-playing games force the other person to experience and address each other's health problems and limitations with a different mindset, thus giving them a better understanding of what it means to grow old. Another way for nurses to become agents of change is through direct experience and promotion of younger generations to volunteer in a senior community to help them change their mindset about senility. This is perhaps the most effective way that nurses will be able to overcome the dilemma
