The son is also somehow imprisoned. Throughout the story he struggles to choose what he wants to do in life, go to school or stay home and help his father fish. This is a difficult decision for him as he is pulled in different directions as his mother wants him to stay and his father tells him to go back to school. At the beginning of the story, readers realize that the narrator works at a university. This shows that the narrator, or the son, chose to pursue the path of education after his father's death. He feels like he owes his father to live his dreams. Another part of this story is the mother's relationship with her husband and children. It is clear that she is strongly against anyone doing anything other than fishing with their life. Why does she strongly dislike anyone who is against fishing, while her husband is the complete opposite? Her husband is a fisherman, whose desire is education, but the mother cannot stand anyone wasting time with useless books. I think this may be because the mother disapproves of what her husband loves, and is upset that he has to escape the life he lives with her and their children, using books. There are key quotes throughout this novel that show the imprisonment the father endured. Towards the end of the story, the narrator states “the brass chains on my wrist”, and also “stuck between two rocks”. These two quotes show the imprisonment the father had experienced throughout his life and his desire to want something more in life than just fishing.
