Topic > A Reflection on Service Learning: Working at Easter…

Monads Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in service to others.” Before this experience I didn't understand this quote; however, I now understand it wholeheartedly. The first time I heard about service learning at Saint Anselm College was when I took a tour during my freshman year of high school. As the tour guide explained what service learning was, it immediately piqued my interest. As a student, I learn best in a more hands-on atmosphere and this experience felt like a perfect fit. After arriving at Saint Anselm College and being offered service, I definitely knew it was something I wanted to participate in. I feel very fortunate to have had this experience, and during my twenty hours, I feel like I am a better, more mature young adult. The Easter Seals agency I served provided great service to children and families. I think the program is very special and offers many children and families benefits and opportunities that they may never have had. The children are served breakfast upon arrival and are fed throughout the day. Additionally, there are frequent deliveries of coats and the like to allow parents to bring warm clothes for their children. The employees are very kind and take great care of the children. The entire agency is very positive and I am grateful to have been able to be part of such a great program. The purpose of Easter Seals Child Care is to support children from low-income families and provide them with meals and a healthcare, warm place to play and learn. They educate children who may not have been able to attend a public school and receive a proper education. The center also provides daycare for infants and toddlers...... middle of paper...... in a classroom and stating, “Miss Laina! I missed you!" I will miss having weekly chats with Owen and reading the same book to Jaclyn every week. I will miss all the children I met. They taught me so much and I am so lucky to have been a volunteer for such amazing children. I would absolutely do it again and plan to continue service learning next semester in the same class. I think Service Learning is a unique and amazing opportunity and the only suggestion I would make based on my experience would be to have a meeting with l. 'teacher in charge of the classroom where you volunteer, just so that people have a better understanding of their tasks and what they need to do. However, overall, I will never forget this experience that changed me life and I already miss all the kids so much that I can't wait for next semester.
