Watching a film based on a book and actually reading it may or may not be a pretty similar experience. S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders was published sixteen years before Francis Ford Coppola turned the book into a film. After reading the book and watching the movie, there are obvious similarities and differences between the two when comparing characters, plot, and details. Cherry and Marcia are both Socs. Hinton describes them as “…tuff looking girls, smartly dressed and really beautiful. They looked about sixteen or seventeen. One had short dark hair and the other had long red hair.” In the film their characters were well chosen because they corresponded to the description in the book. Looking at them in the video it was easy to identify them without knowing their names. Bob, another Soc, is described by Hinton as a drunk who is always looking for a fight, wears large rings known as brass knuckles, and has huge eyes. He is portrayed similarly in the film. Additionally, the film takes dialogue directly from the book. For example, “Do you know what a grease gun is?” Bob asked. “W...
