Imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. In the 20th century, many European countries attempted to colonize the large African continent. Europeans saw Africa as an area they could profit from, as it had a great climate, good size, and some phenomenal natural resources. As Europeans divided the African continent, they failed to see the possible negative effects on themselves and the indigenous people of Africa. Their foresight was limited to positive outcomes only. After Europeans began colonizing Africa, they saw great results rather quickly. European influence had caused the opening of many logging, mining, and plantation companies, as well as many other means of wealth. Document 4 shows this when it says, “…who were largely responsible for opening the region to loggers, miners, planters, and other means of wealth.” By having colonies on the prosperous African continent, the countries would have a huge source of income. By having a colony in Africa, Europeans would have easy access to cheap labor and would be part of the slave trade. Document 1 proves this when it says: “These companies are worked by the natives under their direction. Foreigners bring wealth out of the country. All the hard work is done by enslaved natives.” This would turn an already great profit into an even better one. There are many positive effects for the Europeans when they conquered Africa. However, some may argue that the negative effects outweigh the positive ones. The desire to conquer Africa often led to violent conflicts, which led to many battles and wars, resulting in the loss of much money and men. Document 7 demonstrates this when… halfway through the document… it guarantees indigenous people personal security and ownership of land. This is shown in Document 4, when it states: “For all its flaws, the colonial government provided security for the people and property in the lands…” This transformed what was an uncivilized place, into a place where there were many rules to help citizens. Europeans also opened many industries new to the continent. This provided many jobs for the natives. We can understand this when Document 4 states: “…who were largely responsible for opening the region to loggers, miners, planters and other means of wealth.” many effects. Both positive and negative for Europeans and the indigenous peoples of Africa. Such as death, slavery, rape, embarrassment, loss of money, creation of jobs and creation of prosperous industries.
