Why GMOs should not be present in food. Food, everyone must eat food. In this century there are millions of different foods that can be eaten. But sometimes, as Americans indulge in luxury food options, I wonder if they ever really pay attention to how harmful many foods are to their bodies. I think everyone should turn to organic foods to live a healthier life. The reason why consuming foods is so harmful to the body is because they are full of GMOs. GMOs are "genetically modified organisms", that is, plants or animals genetically modified with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals. These experimental combinations of genes from different species cannot occur in nature, of course (“GMO Facts,” 2014). Eliminating GMOs from your daily diet can be extremely difficult because when you purchase products that contain GMOs you may not know why it doesn't have to be labeled (“GMO Facts,” 2014). There is a non-GMO project that is working to get to the point where products containing GMOs have to be labeled. But until the project is successful you really need to do your research on products that contain GMOs (“GMO Facts,” 2014). One thing you can look for is the USDA certified organic seal because according to USDA regulations GMOs are prohibited in organic farming. When you shop you should and can ask questions about where the food in the store comes from and how it is prepared. Critics of GMOs claim that genetically engineering a food could affect its nutritional value or create toxins in the food (“Lee,” 2014). GMOs are prohibited in organic foods, which is why it is highly recommended to stop consuming genetically modified foods and start consuming organic foods.
