Introduction In recent years, due to the church sexual abuse scandal, child sexual abuse has become one of the most publicized crimes in the United States. Unfortunately, despite this newfound interest in the scandalous topic of abuse, incest and the more common cases of sexual abuse involving the family continue to be overlooked by society and the media. Understandably, intrafamilial sexual abuse is a sensitive and complex topic to recognize and analyze. However, by completely ignoring the topic, we are doing a disservice to the victims who have to endure these heinous crimes and remain silent out of fear. Furthermore, by choosing not to recognize that children are more likely to be abused by a family member than by a stranger, we are constantly sending children the wrong message about who the perpetrators really are and what they actually look like. . While it is possible that a given rapist is a suspicious, unknown assailant, the odds are much greater that the assailant is an acquaintance or family member. To correct many of these misconceptions, society must be introduced to true stories of incest and actively engage in conversations aimed at preventing future victimization. In When the Piano Stops: A Memoir of Healing from Sexual Abuse, Catherine McCall addresses the issue of incest in a frank and honest way that implores readers to not only respectfully listen to her story, but also to reevaluate what they have been told about abuse. Without reservation, it also aims to encourage readers (especially victims of abuse) not to be afraid to speak up or report abuse to the authorities. In his dedication, McCall states that his primary goal in writing the memoir is…at the heart of the paper…religious. In other situations, a trusted friend or family member would be equally helpful. Overall, When the Piano Stops was an exceptional book that highlighted an issue that is unfortunately too often ignored by society. More importantly, however, I think Catherine's story offers solace and solace to victims who might otherwise feel alone in their battle against such devastating victimization. While sometimes crude due to the graphic nature with which it depicts sexual abuse, the story serves as a representative of the thousands of other victims' stories that go untold every day. If there's one adjective I could choose to describe McCall, I'd definitely say she's courageous. Hopefully, McCall's story will also inspire other victims to speak out about incest so that it becomes a more visible (and therefore preventable) crime in society..
