Get Original Essay Metro is one of the famous Canadian grocery stores that includes items such as meat, fish and seafood, fruits and vegetables, beer and wine, health and nutrition. Metro focuses on freshness and bases its prosperity on its separate food combination. Since Metro does not incur the expenses of a traditional distributor (for example, home delivery), it can offer its customers a superior discount and value for money. It also offers items in a wide assortment of sizes to appeal to a small but also large customer base. The stock is divided by product type as the items must move at different temperatures. Due to perishable food products, supplies need to be replenished day after day. When the store stores non-perishable food products, the main issue is to stock such products in right quantity as per the demand and this is where supply chain management comes in and plays a vital role in inventory management. Replenishments must be planned carefully and frequently so that stores do not have excessive stocks of food products and they must be stored in appropriate warehouses in the right quantity. Instead of working in large-scale transportation hubs, Metro has its own few break-bulk platforms dedicated to particular items classified as natural produce and vegetables, fish, fresh and frozen foods to speed up management and freshness assurance. Demand Forecasting Demand forecasting is the scientific and analytical estimate of the demand for a product (service) for a particular period of time. To know in detail the demand forecasting methods used by the metro, we met with the supervisor of the metro who gave us an insight into how they determine the demand for the products. He said they mainly use 3 methods to determine the demand for the products. The techniques are as follows:Survey methods.Opinion poll methods.Statistical methods.1. Survey methods: With survey methods Metro conducts surveys on consumer intentions, expert opinions, surveys on management plans or markets. The data obtained through these methods is analyzed and demand forecasts are made. These methods are generally used to make short-term forecasts of demand. Consumer Survey: Metro generally uses these methods. The consumer survey method for forecasting demand involves directly interviewing potential consumers. Consumers are simply contacted by the interviewer and asked how much they would be willing to purchase for a particular product at a series of alternative product price levels. Consumer survey can take any form such as: Comprehensive enumeration Sample survey End use method.2. Opinion poll methods: Opinion poll methods perform demand estimation using theopinions of those with market knowledge, such as professional marketing experts and consultants, sales representatives and executives. Collection judgment by experienced people can serve as an important source of information. Metro does not use them frequently but uses them when the product particularly requires detailed market research. In fact, some predictions are made almost entirely based on the personal intuitions of key decision makers.3. Statistical Methods: Metro uses previous research data to determine demand for products. The above data helps determine the trend of supply and demand, which helps Metro analyze market scenarios. Procurement Procurement is the process of recognizing the need for the goods, finding an appropriate supplier, establishing convenient payment terms, and actually purchasing the goods. In other words, procurement means acquiring all the goods, services and labor required by a company. Metro is a retail company that provides a wide range of products to customers so as to offer the best product for the price. Metro's purchasing, merchandising and replenishment teams work closely together. To ensure products are available in stores, Metro's procurement team performs the following steps: Internal Requirements Analysis: Metro's procurement process begins with analyzing the requirements of the goods needed to fill store shelves. In every metro store there is a proper technological inventory and sales management system that records how much they sell in a day and how much inventory they have at that time and based on this they estimate what and how much good they need. That product can be a brand new item or one that is reordered. There are some specific products such as fresh products and fruit and vegetables that require updated reordering. Examine supplier options: In every procurement process, each company must decide which supplier to receive its goods from. Metro has a long list of suppliers because it deals with different types of goods. Metro sticks to its regular vendors to purchase goods and also tries to find a new supplier who can minimize costs. Metro purchases final products directly from a large number of manufacturers. Price and Terms: After deciding on the seller, a business needs to finalize the payment, terms and conditions of the business. Metro has various agreements and contracts with its suppliers. Metro purchases products from its sellers at low prices and these products at retail prices. Receiving and Inspection – Metro receives goods from its large number of vendors and then these goods are delivered to Metro distribution centers. During distribution, workers inspect and subsequently accept or reject the product. They also reject or file a complaint for damaged goods. This damage can be caused during transportation of the goods or during loading or unloading. Delivery – After placing an order, the goods are delivered to the Metro distribution center. In these distribution centers the metro procurement team organizes the goods according to the needs of each store and then delivers these goods to the metro stores according to their order or need. Invoice and Payment – Once the goods have been received, the final invoice number has been created and the final payment is made to the suppliers. They need the invoice number, receiving document and original purchase order to complete the procurement process and make the final payment to the supplier. Warehouse/storage/handling of materialsBy gathering information with the supervisor of one of Metro's distribution centers, we came to learn about the company's warehousing/storage and material handling system. After the two major grocery stores Loblaw Companies Limited and Sobeys, Metro came in third place with 365 different locations in Ontario and Quebec. The products coming from different distributors later, according to their order, they send them to different stores, for example, Metro, Food basics and other retail stores. Products such as meat, seafood, fruits and vegetables, health and nutritional products are stored in warehouse and the method used to release the material is known as First in First Out (FIFO). Metro consists of four types of warehouses, where different products are stored at different temperatures. One of the regular temperature warehouses contains detergents, cat food, water and juices, and dry food such as pasta, rice flour, cheese flour. The cold chain involves the meat and dairy product kept from the level of 0°C to -5°C. Fruit and vegetables are stored in the mixture at an average temperature of 5°C to 10°C or 15°C depending on the products. Material handling is known as moving material when it is moved short distances in a storage area. Material handling includes loading, unloading, palletizing and depalletizing. At Metro, forklift equipment is used to move materials or place them correctly in storage. Metro uses this system to improve customer services, reduce inventory, shorten delivery times and reduce overall operating costs in manufacturing, distribution and transportation. Transportation Metro Inc.'s transportation network is considered one of the best networks for supply chain and logistics. At Metro, they embrace transportation innovation as they continually explore new ways to create collaboration, reduce carbon impacts and accelerate business. Metro has the resources and industry positioning to develop and implement dynamic, business-focused solutions at competitive prices. Constantly improving logistics and distribution is one of the key priorities to maintain our competitive advantage in an increasingly competitive market. The logistics sector manages the transport and storage of goods. Metro makes more than one million deliveries per year, and trucks are commonly used to make these deliveries. Our team works in several ways to improve the fuel efficiency of our company fleet, including: Replacing old trucks with new ones, while also providing more efficient models that can help minimize harmful emissions. Improving aerodynamics by adding side skirts on trailers. Driver training. on techniques for progressive switching and minimizing downtime. They use battery-powered auxiliary power units, rather than using diesel to heat the sleeper cabins. They retread tires when the threads are worn, which helps them divert waste from landfill and reduce the oil consumption required to make new tires. Improve processes and systems to increase the number of boxes per load and reduce the number of empty miles traveled when trucks return to their point of origin. Driving 60 foot trailers in Ontario. Therefore, the above-mentioned points make the metropolitan transportation system more reliable and rapidly growing. Metro comprises more than 600 grocery stores operating under different banners and their success can be mainly due to the transportation and logistics team that delivers goods and products on time.
