Blackfish is a deeply moving story about the cruel treatment of orcas held in captivity in marine parks. It evokes sadness and anger in the viewer by depicting the barbaric treatment of these beautiful creatures in places too small and contained for these large open ocean creatures. But the question needs to be asked: is this an impartial documentary, including the whole truth? Some of the trainers in the film never work with whales, and some have been "removed" or fired for animal cruelty. There are so many other lies and falsehoods woven into Blackfish, but the point is that these people are neither the most qualified spokespersons nor credible sources, but the documentary certainly puts a lot of effort into making it seem like they are. At one point in the film, Samantha, a trainer, talks about her first time in the water with orcas and footage is shown of a similar-looking girl in the water with a killer whale, even though Samantha has never swam with an orca. When the film's director discovered that a former SeaWorld coach would soon publicly announce most of the lies, she was discreetly asked to "wait until after awards season to criticize Blackfish." The director never seemed to care about what her documentary seemed to represent, but her only thoughts were on increasing her ratings, sales and "success" as a filmmaker.
