Topic > Industrial Revolutions and the Development of Democracy Around the World

America and France have gone through revolutions, more specifically, political revolutions. While this political revolution was taking place, another revolution was taking place in England. This revolution was poetic. This coming of age has changed English poetry to such an extent that people would not even dare to call it such. This type of poetry was so confusing, a bit gothic and very unfamiliar. This type of poetry is widely known as romance. During the advent of Romanticism, British life was changing dramatically due to industrialization and democracy. Industrialization and democracy in England are specific historical situations that occur and, just like this, poetry also arises in these situations and connects to these historical movements. British life formed a new spirit and with William Wordsworth's publications, he highlights how this new spirit fits so well into his poems. Comment by mo: Don't forget to include somewhere how romantic a British phenomenon this is. Democracy is a widely known term. A term universally understood as a type of government in which an individual has a say. None other than England has a distinct history with the rise of its democracy. Say no to plagiarism. Throughout this power struggle, the English government tried to ensure that all social classes had a say. Before the English government saw this transformation into a monarchy with a parliamentary democracy, a hierarchy existed. Just like America with its classes like upper class, middle class, working class, etc., the English had their own social totality in the 17th century. The mode of production began from the bottom. Farmers fell within this category. This category would be the lower class, the peasants, if you will. They were considered poor and generally found it difficult to enjoy life while earning little or nothing while trying to provide for their family. The next category, just above the agrarians, were the day laborers known as the middle class. This class was not rich, but it was not poor either. At the top was the heart of democracy. This was the upper class which included kings, church officials, nobles, etc. Not only did the government change society, but also industrialization. Industrialization brought manufactured goods, but it also brought with it harsh living conditions and little employment. The industrial revolution brought good fortune to the middle and upper class, but as for the lower class, they still faced challenges just as they did when dealing with the social totality. Wages were low, there was child labor and little or no job security. William Woodsworth was known to be a great Romantic poet. The Romantic was a British phenomenon, but Woodsworth was only one piece of the puzzle that launched the Romantic period in English literature.
