Tourism can pose a threat to a host nation's natural resources, such as water supplies, beaches, and historic sites, due to overuse and abuse of resources. Take Machu Picchu for example, the site receives around 1800 visitors per day out of the maximum 2500 allowed by local authorities ("Machu Picchu in danger due to too many tourists."). Authorities began to notice soil erosion and damage to vegetation due to the influx of visitors. The village that served as a starting point for heading to Machu Picchu has become a city with five-star hotels and restaurants. People fear that if they continue to allow so many tourists to visit, irreparable damage will occur to Machu Picchu and they may lose sight of the heritage.
