Topic > The Nature of Technology by W. Brian Arthur - 822

W. The Nature of Technology by Brian Arthur explains how technology is transformative and answers unanswered questions about the evolution of technology. Arthur talks about the technology that has transformed the world over the years. It takes readers through a journey of how technology is evolving. He makes a comparison about technology, wondering if technology evolves just like biological life. Raise the topic of technology and science by combining these two topics to find the answers. In The Nature of Technology, Arthur discusses theories of technology and development that help build society. Arthur discusses various topics on technology; begins the first chapter with questions. An interesting question that Arthur asks is: “What is technology in its nature, in its deepest essence? Where does it come from? And how does it evolve?” (Arthur, 10) Next, he states that he will ask more questions in his book. Throughout the chapter he talks about the birth of technology and how it is analyzed to understand the birth of new technologies. An interesting thing Arthur said “And we have meditations on the meaning of technology, and technology as determining --- or not determining --- human history. But we have no agreement on what the word “technology” means, no general theory of how technologies arise, no deep understanding of what “innovation” consists of, and no theory of the evolution of technology.” (Arthur, 13) Arthur is trying to convey that there is no real meaning to technology because of all the different things that technologies do. I find it interesting how Arthur talks about technology because in the book he states that there is no theory as to how technology is... middle of paper... created and where it comes from, and basically all the questions anyone might have about technology that now governs our lives. However, Arthur throughout the book remained focused on trying to answer the questions he asked throughout the book. The structure of the book was made to make it easy to read, for example when he moved on to another topic, he would have a title and start discussing the topic he was going to discuss. Arthur comments on his theories about technology and provides information to the reader about what he is trying to say, he also uses outside sources that relate to what he is trying to say. Overall, The Nature of Technology is a book that offers a different view of technology that makes the reader think about how ancient and modern technologies change without even noticing the little things that are happening..
