“Don't like these ideas? I have others” – Marshall McLuhan (Logan 2011). Great theorists build on theories and never stop researching. By looking at how communication theories are used every day and even used to create new theories, this study showcases one of the foundational theorists of communications and media. The point of view of theorists, Marshall McLuhan, be explained and discussed in terms of “today”. This study is quite important as many theories have been created with some of its views, but not fully understood. McLuhan had a difficult way of writing and thinking, thus leaving readers quite confused (Logan 2011). The study will show the theorist's main points of view, an explanation in modern-day terms, and a conclusion will follow. Secondary research The collection of journals, interviews, documents and previous studies with information about the theorist and his theories will be carried out. Textbooks, online documents and web pages will be used. Challenges will arise during the study. McLuhan had a different way of thinking, he lived in a different time and some of the material may be outdated. To overcome these challenges, information must be validated from various sources.1. Theorist Marshall McLuhan was a Canadian-born communication theorist who lived from 1911 to 1980 (Curtis 2011). He is one of the greatest thinkers when it comes to defining media and predicted the Word Wide Web through his “Global Village” theory three decades before it was invented (Curtis 2011). Theorists after McLuhan have used his theories as a basis from which to work – this indeed demonstrates a certain significance for McLuhan (Siapera 2012, p. 7). Initially, McLuhan did not expect to explore theories of media and technology. In 1936, while standing next to them, you are able to hear people/things that you would not have been able to hear in your location, etc. McLuhan argued that the media contained previous media: the press contained writing, writing originated from speech. It all goes back to the basic form of communication and media. He also reasoned that the message is not actually the content of the medium, but the characteristics of the medium. The "Global Village" encapsulates all its theories by saying that the earth has shrunk due to the fact that communication is so easy all over the world. .By examining McLuhan's three major theories one can understand why he is seen as one of the foundational theorists of media and technology. Even though he had a peculiar way of thinking and writing, his theories make sense and are easy to understand. Whether you read it in 1990 or 2020, it will still be relevant.
