What do student athletes and coaches want most? What do teachers and administrators ask for most? School spirit answers both questions. Many schools across the nation do not understand the importance of school spirit. School spirit has the power to work miracles in the sporting and educational worlds, and schools have noticed. Student athletes and coaches want more school spirit because crowd enthusiasm provides a team with an energy unattainable under any other circumstances. Teachers and administrators want greater school spirit because they want students to have a positive attitude when attending school. What school district wouldn't want positive attitudes from its students? All schools need to step up their school spirit to gain the positive benefits that school spirit has to offer. A tradition is something that people enjoy being involved in; whether starting a new one or joining an ongoing one. Traditions cannot work if the spirit is not present, especially school traditions. An Oregon college, Linfield, has decided to start a tradition in an effort to boost school spirit for upcoming sports seasons. Linfield held what they called "Cat Camp" (Sigler). This camp trained students in cheering and did various activities to increase energy. Activities Director Dan Fergueson commented, “Cat Camp went better than we hoped, we were excited to try a new tradition and a fresh start, but we were kind of nervous that it might not have the excitement we were hoping for” (Sigler ). The director wasn't the only one to approve of the enhanced spirit; Sophomore Austin Browning said, “I appreciated the audience's response when I asked them to cheer because…middle of the paper…plays a vital role in a school's athletic and educational programs. School spirit has the power to start a tradition, “alter an outcome,” “[increase morale]” (Benavidez), and improve attitudes. Students, teachers, athletes, administrators, coaches and others can all benefit from the positive effects of school spirit. School spirit is easy for some and difficult for others, but supportive school spirit is something all schools need to experience. Schools must make school spirit a top priority on their list of goals because the benefits are endless. School spirit not only helps a school achieve excellence in competitive events, but also has the ability to provide endless relationships between athletes and coaches, students and teachers, and between teachers and administrators. All in all, school spirit is powerful and can completely change a school.
