Topic > Gordon Allport Analysis of Pride and Prejudice - 1297

“Physiognomic” is the word Allport uses to explain how being black has a negative connotation. Allport adds that the English language links black to “sinister connotations” such as “black death” or “black heart” (368). In this hunt, the color black is associated with evil and white is associated with good or pure. If whiteness means purity and morality, then why did white people own slaves? Why weren't blacks and whites on equal footing? He returns to Allport's message that "The very act of classifying forces us to neglect all other characteristics..." he tells us that the label "black" allows us to see only that: black (365). Other words may be associated with blacks such as: police officer, writer and doctor, but in the back of our minds, black is still a word with a negative valence.
