The French Revolution began in 1789 and ended in the 1790s. During this period citizens rampaged through France showing their disapproval of the French monarch and the feudal system. Like the American Revolution, the French Revolution was fueled by Enlightenment ideals such as popular sovereignty and absolute rights. As the 18th century drew to a close, France's costly involvement in the American Revolution and King Louis XVI's extravagant spending had left the country on the brink of bankruptcy. Two decades of poor grain harvests, drought, livestock disease and skyrocketing bread prices had sparked unrest among farmers. However, one of the biggest problems of the French Revolution was King Louis XVI. Non-Aristocratic Members of the Revolution It later appeared that Maximilien Robespierre imposed this not only on those who were considered enemies of the Revolution, but also on people who showed signs of being against him. Then, he started killing people for no reason. A crying child should not be slaughtered for crying when he was sentenced to death and a woman should not be killed for crying when her husband was just guillotined. These were reckless massacres of innocent people, and people were starting to realize that. Danton, who was a revolutionary leader alongside Robespierre, and his followers believed that the Terror was no longer necessary, and for this they were labeled "Indulgents". He was popular and an extraordinary orator and the Jacobin-dominated Committee of Public Safety perceived him as a threat. He was executed without trial as an "enemy of the Revolution". Danton was a threat because if he made people realize how useless the Reign of Terror was, then Robespierre would be out of a job.
