Servant leadership, found in chapter ten of Leadership: Theory and Practice, is a paradoxical approach to leadership. It begins with the innate desire to serve first, and then lead through servitude. Servant Leadership, born in the early 1970s, is similar in approach to skills and styles, focusing on leadership from the leader's perspective and his or her behavior under leadership. With this leadership style, leaders take into account the needs of followers, empathize and feel compassion for followers. A servant leader feels a social responsibility towards the less privileged and is concerned about inequality among followers. Through servant leadership, a servant leader will attempt to correct these social injustices and enable and empower followers by helping followers develop valuable personal skills.
