During this course I found many of the topics discussed interesting. Among many, the topic that I found most interesting concerns animal rights. I want to further express my opinion on this topic. I believe that animals have no rights and that people only give rights to animals because they believe animals have souls. I came to this conclusion through further reading and personal experiences. Animals have no rights because animals have no voices. If animals had voices they would be considered human beings, which obviously they are not. Animals are actually subcreatures of the world. My position on this issue stems from the fact that animals are treated exactly as they are; animals. Animals are designed to accommodate humans for different purposes. Sometimes animals are there to supplement the company. In the case of the widow or widower, the single person who lives alone or the single but only child without siblings, animals help alleviate the sense of abandonment. Animals are also used to entertain us. When children attend a circus or a day at the zoo, the animals are there for entertainment purposes only. In part nine, section six, of the second edition of John Cottingham's Western Philosophy, he writes about Immanuel Kant's views on animal rights. In this section he explains that Kant argues that we, as human beings, have duties towards animals. Kant believes that our duties to animals are indirect, but animals are "analogues" of humans and our relationship with animals provides an example of how we would interact with another human being. He continues to explain that since animals have no sense of judgment, we as humans must act on their behalf. Kant refers to Alexander Baumgarten, another philosopher... middle of paper... the only animals who enjoy hunting as a sport like humans. Cats hunt even when they are not hungry and find their prey to be toys. This also applies to large wild cats. The male lion will kill lion cubs if they belong to the fallen enemy of a pride he is trying to rule. How could we sympathize with such an animal? Animals are not our friends. We know that animals are not equal to the superior man. Animals are viscous and survive by any means necessary, even if it means attacking humans. For them pain is not a factor, so it brings no more pain into the world and animals have no moral rights. Eating animals is normal and necessary for human survival. It is the decision of humans to use animals for their own enjoyment and entertainment, but it all boils down to the fact that animals are here to serve humans.
