For this research paper I will look at Monsanto through the theory of John Rawls and the functional paradigm. Monsanto is the most recognized company in the agricultural industry. Today they are famous for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) that are changing our perception of how we purchase and eat our food. Many countries around the world have come out strongly against GMOs and Monsanto, banning them from selling their products. However, the United States and North America are in favor of GMOs. The United States may have a misperception of Monsanto, as if it allows them to pretend to share the pie equally. Monsanto was founded in 1901 and founded by John F Queeny. The company began in St. Louis, Missouri, as a Monsanto chemical company. In the 1920s Monsanto expanded into a basic chemical industry (Rowell). With their expertise in the chemical industry, they contributed to uranium research to aid the Manhattan Project. Monsanto became a nuclear power plant for the US government until the late 1980s. In the 1940s, Monsanto became a leader in the production of synthetic fibers and plastics, however, on the EPA list, Monsanto ranked fifth in producing the most hazardous waste (Rowell). During the 1940s Monsanto began producing 2,4-D which would later be used in the chemical, Agent Orange. He also produced the infamous DDT. This product was used to fight malaria, typhus and other insect-borne diseases. DDT was an immediate success; military and civilian populations used it to protect themselves from mosquitoes and insects. It was also used on crops, livestock and gardens. At the time it was believed that it was not harmful to humans or animals; however, in recent years we have discovered that this is not true. In 1972, the EPA canceled DDT based on advertising… half the paper… exported after aerial spraying. Np, 7 April 2008. Web. 10 November 2013..Mercante, M. Insects in the city.
