Globalization can be defined as “The process by which an increasingly free flow of ideas, people, goods, services and capital leads to the integration of economies and societies”. (International Monetary Fund, 2009). An alternative definition describes globalization as “a process in which geographical constraints on economic, political, social and cultural structures are receding”. (Waters, M. 2002) This essay details the various ways in which globalization can be understood or explained, using numerous sociological concepts and perspectives. These concepts and perspectives include the ideas of cultural globalization, technological, economic and environmental globalization, globalization and social change, social movements and inequality. The term globalization originated in the business sector of the world during the 1980s, however when it began to be used by sociologists around 1990 a more social way of viewing the concept was adopted. The history of globalization involves looking at what can be described as the "six waves of globalization" that analyze the concept of globalization from the year 300 to the present. The six waves of globalization are the result of a theory by Goran Thebron, a Swedish sociologist, who states that "globalization should be seen as a plural phenomenon" (van Krieken, R. 2014) which suggests that "the dynamics of each particular globalization process is the result of its emergence over time”. (van Krieken, R. 2014) Globalization is a term or concept often discussed heavily in sociological debates. An example of this is evident in the sociological concept of cultural globalization, which is the aspect of globalization that concerns values, ideas and beliefs that are held... middle of paper... technology and such powerful multinational transnational power, yes a globalized economy is formed. A globalized economy means that interactions between the national economies of different nations have been brought to such a high level that economic boundaries have literally been dissipated, resulting in a globalized and interconnected economy. Globalization is not a concept that can be fully analyzed and discussed from a purely economic perspective, it must also be approached using a wide variety of alternative sociological concepts and ideas. Therefore, by analyzing the sociological concepts of cultural globalization, technological, economic and environmental globalization and global social change, social movements and inequality, it can be seen that the notion of globalization is both complex and evolving, which means that it will continue to be analyzed for many years to come.
