“You can't take your body to a repair shop and ask them to fix it. This is the only one you get, so treat it well,” – Kathy Tucker, New Palestine High School health teacher. Proper treatment of the human body requires a tremendous amount of responsibility. Eating healthy and exercising can improve the physical, mental and emotional state of the body and mind. Abusing the body through eating disorders to maintain a certain body appearance can cause serious and potentially long-term damage. These mental illnesses harm the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of a person's health. Serious health problems attributed to eating disorders can lead to illness, depression and death. Proper diet and exercise are essential for maintaining the human body. Some people think that eating healthy and exercising daily is too time-consuming and expensive. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends that a person get two and a half hours of moderate exercise or one hour and fifteen minutes of vigorous exercise per week (n.d., paragraph 2). The Department also suggests a minimum half hour of daily physical exercise (nd, paragraph). Unfortunately for some, those thirty minutes are thirty minutes more than they want or have the time to devote to exercise. The cost of healthy eating may also be more than people are willing or able to spend. Healthier diets appear to cost about $1.50 more than less healthy diets, which average $550 per year (Eating healthy and unhealthy costs about $1.50 more per day, 2013, 1, 3). For some people, time and money seem to outweigh the benefits of treating the body properly to ensure longevity. The benefits of a healthy diet and moderate exercise far outweigh the monetary cost and… halfway through the paper… below are some of the benefits,1; Weir, 2011, 14). “Exercise or activity helps you maintain a healthier weight. The muscles are firmer, they're in better shape, they're in better tone, so when we look in the mirror we feel better about ourselves, so that's the emotional thing,” Kathy Tucker (personal communication, May 7, 2014). The exercise can also relieve anger and frustration, as well as give a person a sense of accomplishment (Exercise and Mental Health, the lists below are some of the benefits, 4,6). As a result, the body is just as good as that how it is treated. Mistreatment of the body through eating disorders will not result in a healthy mind or body. Conversely, a healthy lifestyle, including exercise and healthy eating, can impact the body on a mental, physical and emotional level and ultimately increase quality of life and longevity..
