IntroductionFor over 500 years, magnificent castles of all shapes and sizes were built throughout Western Europe. These strong fortifications were built to defend the castle's many occupants. The stunning architecture of these structures continues to amaze people around the world as the remains of many can still be seen after thousands of years. Castles were first introduced to England by William the Conqueror in 1066 AD. He and his Norman lords built castles across the English countryside and claimed England as their own. From then on castles were chosen as ideal buildings for the protection of all of England. The word "castle" in Latin (castellum) means "fortified place". Motte and Bailey Castles Motte and Bailey Castles were the first known castles to be built. The construction of these castles would create a trend that would last until 1550 AD The castles of Motte and Bailey were initially built by the French to defend their land from Scandinavian (Viking) invaders. They were very simple wooden towers, built on a mound (Motte). These mounds were often man-made with a wooden fence (palisade) built around them. A narrow bridge and doorway led to a large enclosed area known as the courtyard. A moat often surrounded the castle to add further protection against unwanted enemies. Motte and Bailey Castles were first introduced to England by William the Conqueror and his Norman lords. William built the first Motte and Bailey Castle in Dover following his victory at Hastings. Due to the short time it took to build, the castle only took 8 days to build! The Normans built a large number of Motte and Bailey castles in England, but only a few still exist. From one point of view, Motte and Bailey castles were and...... half of paper... we felt more confident in defending a strong and complex castle. Some disadvantages of a concentric castle include: concentric castles are very expensive to build, take a long time to build, require more workers and skills to build, and need a larger food supply for a large number of soldiers. Conclusion In conclusion, the development of castles during the medieval period introduced some of the spectacular forms of infrastructure we see today. The development of castles over the course of a few centuries testifies to humanity's evolutionary leap. We can learn from the mistakes and successes of medieval castles. It shows us how a building can last thousands of years if we use the correct method and materials. Even though castles are no longer used in today's society, they are still an educational work of art that should be preserved for its beauty.
