Takaki wrote a great article on cultural diversity. There will always be different perspectives on an issue like this; for the most part I agree with Takaki in the sense that he does his own research on American history and doesn't just conform to the history and ideology he was taught. Woodward was dismissive of Takaki's opinions and beliefs because they did not align with his own. Woodward is stuck in time when it comes to looking at things and doesn't want to evolve and think outside the box when it comes to American history and culture.
