Popular culture and the media are deeply intertwined concepts, as the media often acts as a driving force behind the ever-growing phenomenon of a universal culture. With the help of modernization, the importance of media and popular culture in contemporary society has changed, proving that the concept of modernity is an integral part of understanding popular culture and media. Furthermore, popular culture and media are interconnected with concepts of power and agency, as they are key players in society (Habermas, 1989). The concept of "celebrity" is also intertwined in this. It is debatable whether popular culture and the media are positive or negative forces in contemporary society. Some perspectives support the connective nature of the media, arguing that they have enabled globalization. However, other perspectives demonstrate that the media and popular culture have spread harmful problems in society. The media, as an increasingly global sensation, cannot be understood or explained unless viewed through the lens of modernity. Indeed, even the spread of popular culture can be attributed to modernization throughout the developed world. Significant technological and social advances have accompanied modernization, radically altering the role of media and popular culture in contemporary society. However, its impact is widely debated. On the positive side, modernity has promoted globalization, thus increasing the importance of media. Individuals previously segregated from the world have greater opportunities to join it, particularly through the Internet and television. Therefore, an understanding of popular culture and media, especially its advantages and disadvantages, cannot be achieved without a comparison with modernity and the process of modernization. It is evident that popular culture and the media, with regards to modernization, act as positive and negative influences on contemporary society. While concepts are credited with the power to influence constructive social change, it can also be argued that models are responsible for many aspects of society that need to be changed.
