The practice of using ritual powers, magic, and the invocation of spirits, generally referred to as witchcraft, is a fascinating subject shrouded in mystery. Although it is an ancient practice, witchcraft is still a very relevant topic in modern society. In Evans-Pritchard's article titled "The Notion of Witchcraft Explains Unfortunate Events," he focuses on how witchcraft helps the people of the Azande tribe make sense of the relationship between their people and the unfortunate events they encounter. It not only provides them with a “natural philosophy” but also dictates how they should react to such unfortunate events. Witchcraft is found in every corner of their culture and affects how they perceive things and how their tribe functions according to specific laws, morals, etiquette, and religion. The Zande come into contact with witchcraft on a daily basis. They respond with aggression and annoyance, rather than shock or fear, because it is part of their ordinary world. They do not hold witchcraft responsible for every simple misfortune they encounter, nor do they place the blame for misfortune solely on witchcraft. They use witchcraft to explain "the particular conditions in a chain of causality that link an individual to natural events in such a way as to sustain injury." An example is the collapse of a barn while people were sitting under it to escape the heat of the day. People sitting under the barn were subsequently injured. They recognize that the barn collapsed due to termites eating the supports and the wood decayed over time and they also recognize that people were sitting under the barn to escape the heat but they use witchcraft to explain why these two events coincide. ..... medium of paper...... accusations (which had limits) of witchcraft, to then venture into "vaguer areas" and try to make sense of the rumors or the role of healers and the way which influence social relationships. It is interesting to note that to significantly renew the study of witchcraft, authors must stay away from a “moralizing discourse” and must not make a clear distinction between good and evil. Witchcraft can be seen to be a “constantly changing set of notions” as anthropologists have reflected on and interpreted different circumstances. (Geschiere, 1997) It can be seen that witchcraft is still widespread in many different countries and the reasons for practicing it are all different. It is therefore a complicated but fascinating topic in which many different theories and points of view have emerged which have led to the still underlying uncertainty surrounding the practice of witchcraft..
