Topic > Hamlet: Laertes as Foils in Shakespeare's Hamlet

When Laertes finds out that his father, Polonius, is dead, he acted without hesitation while Hamlet avenged his father's death by slowly plotting step by step. During Act 3, Scene 4 (1-9 p.1), Polonius and Gertrude talk to each other and tell Gertrude to talk to Hamlet while he spies on him. “Lord Polonius: He will come directly. Look, keep him at home: tell him that his pranks have been too great to bear, and that your grace has acted as a screen and has interposed much warmth between him and him. I will despise myself here too. Please stay with him. Hamlet: [Inside] Mother, mother, mother! Queen Gertrude: I assure you, do not fear me: retreat, I feel it coming. As Hamlet and his mother Gertrude talk, they have a small argument and Hamlet says that he is upset that she married Claudius. Then Gertrude continued by saying that we will also talk about it with others. At this point Hamlet doesn't want anyone to talk about it outside the room and when Gertrude tries to leave Hamlet he doesn't let her move. Gertrude continues to scream for help and when Polonius hears it he does the same behind the tapestry. Hamlet had already thought that the mouse was Claudius and without hesitation killed the mouse with his sword only to later discover that he had accidentally killed Polonius. Act 3, scene 4 (28 page 2) “Hamlet “No, I know not: is he the king?” The news reaches Laertes and upon returning from France he assumes that it was Claudius who killed his father and immediately tries to take revenge. “Laertes: To hell with loyalty! Oaths to the blackest devil! Consciousness and grace, to the deepest abyss! I would dare damnation. At this point I argue that I give both worlds to negligence. Whatever happens, only I will take full revenge for my father. Act 4, scene 5 (105-110 pages 7). He later discovers that it was Hamlet who killed Polonius. Through these points we can see how Laertes is a foil to Hamlet, because he acts without knowing reasons.
