Article by Steffen, “Gender stereotypes derive from the distribution of women and men in social roles”. In this article, they discuss the root of gender stereotypes that arise from the unequal distribution of roles for men and women in society. They believe that too many women are left to be “housewives” while men become professionals. This is evident in Survivors as the show chooses to have Abby take on this maternal role. This unequal distribution of roles then leads, in turn, to labeling men and women with certain qualities. According to Steffen and Eagly, women are believed to have communal qualities, or “manifested by altruism, concern for others, and the desire to be one with others,” and men are believed to have agency qualities, or “self-affirmation, self-expansion, and the desire to master” (Eagly, Steffen 736).
