To Kill A MockingbirdMonkey See, Monkey Do – learning a process without understanding why it works. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is about how a small southern Maycomb family of the 1930s deals with intertwining and branching situations. The family of Jem and Scout, along with their father Atticus Finch, will be present at a rape trial in the county. Along the way, Jem acquires a moral for life that will forever be imprinted in his mind. It hadn't snowed in Maycomb County in a long time. Since kids will be kids, Jem and Scout go outside and start building a snowman. So happy with their work, they drag Atticus to their snowman. «You can't go around making caricatures of your neighbors» «It looks just like him.» “Mr. Avery may not think so.” Atticus said. (67) Here, in this passage, Jem learns that it is not appropriate to make fun of others, much less his neighbors. To portray the figure of a snowman for a man would not be the greatest compliment on Earth, but rather an insult in the eyes of others.' “I wanted you to see what real courage is instead of having the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand… He was the bravest person I ever knew.” ' (112) Here Jem discovers that their neighbor, Mrs. Dubose, had just died. Weeks before this happened, Jem had cut all the flowers from his garden because he had offended Atticus by calling him a "nigger lover." Atticus was showing Jem that Mrs. Dubose had had a severe addiction to morphine. Which she managed to free herself from. He had the strength and courage to die freely. Afterwards, Atticus gives him a box that Mrs. Dubose had left for Jem. He opens the box and inside finds a camellia, one of the few flowers that...... middle of paper...... don't harm you in any way, so why kill them. All they do is bring peace to the ear of man. When something doesn't hurt you in any way, shape or form, there's no reason to hurt it. Jem reflects on this when the court comes to an agreement that Tom will be sentenced to the death penalty. Jem begins to cry because he knows the truth that Tom did not rape that so-called victim. Jem knew that all Tom did was help people and nothing else. He had done nothing but bring peace, just like the mockingbirds. Yet he was injured in the process. Jem has learned the hard truth about society: that it is those with power who defeat less fortunate individuals. He discovered it in Maycomb County, his home. So why do we like to harm those who do nothing but try to bring us peace? Until we find the answer, the world will collapse into chaos.’
