The Enola Gay is a B-29 bomber used in the bombing of Japan. It was flown by the pilot, Paul Tibbets, who named the plane after his mother, Enola Gay Tibbets. Tibbets flew the plane on August 6, 1945, carrying a bomb, nicknamed Little Boy, a result of the Manhattan Project. The bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and caused the deaths of tens of thousands of people (“Enola Gay's pilot felt that dropping the atomic bomb was his duty”). The dropping of the Big Boy and Little Boy bombs caused much controversy due to the repercussions it left in Japan. Many thousands of people died or were injured as a result of the bombings. Enola pilot Gay said in an interview: “I saw my mission as saving lives…I didn't bomb Pearl Harbor. I didn't start the war. But I was about to finish it. ("Enola Gay's pilot felt that dropping the atomic bomb was his duty"). Many people consider Paul Tibbets a symbol of atomic warfare, but we must remember that he was a pilot who followed orders. He honestly believed that if he hadn't dropped the bomb, "It would have been morally wrong if we had had that weapon and not used it and let a million more people die" ("Enola Gay pilot felt that dropping the bomb atomic bomb was his duty"). Tibbets said this in a PBS interview for the event's 50th anniversary. The use of the Enola Gay in the Great War or World War I was controversial due to its use in bombing Japanese citizens, many of whom were not soldiers. Another controversy involving the Enola Gay is known simply as the Enola Gay Controversy. The Enola Gay Controversy involved the putting of the Enola Gay on display for a museum exhibit. Veterans groups wanted it on display. The Smithsonian had the bomber, but it was dismantled and many thieves... middle of paper..."addiction" abandoning its original purpose (Kohn, Richard, 1036). The Danger of Overusing History in The Enola Gay Controversy Case Leaves Out an Entire Story. It can be argued that a nationalistic history does not need to be complete, but a complete history is important. The museum as well as its curators of the Enola Gay exhibit were trying to conflate the two stories and the veterans were pushing a distorted nationalistic version of the story. In an attempt to provide a complete history, the story of the Enola Gay was used, distorted and abused because the museum was making an effort to make all groups happy, but the story of the Enola Gay is a controversial story, so make everyone happy was impossible. This is why the original show didn't happen because all parties didn't agree on the story.
