Pro-choice or pro-life? This is a question everyone asks when it comes to abortion. Is it really "killing" a baby when he only has one egg and nothing more? In this argument, the answer is pro-choice. “Around the world, wherever abortion is illegal and dangerous, dedicated people take enormous risks to provide safe abortions clandestinely to treat women who have complications and to help women find safe providers” (“Abortion”). Abortion was practiced legally in the United States until 1880. The legality of abortion is/was based on the status and political power of the woman. Abortion should remain legal and easily accessible to all women because it will put them at ease mentally knowing they have a choice, to show the world that they are equal to everyone else and that they are capable of making their own choices. (“Abortion”) There are many disadvantages to making abortion illegal. One reason is that, if made illegal, many pregnant women would undergo unsafe and potentially lethal abortions. In fact, half of all pregnancies in the United States are intentional. Without abortion, what will happen to these mothers with unintended children? Every year there are 68,000 maternal deaths due to clandestine or illegal abortions. Furthermore, every 7 minutes a woman dies worldwide due to unsafe abortions. “Before 1966, Romania allowed abortion and consequently maintained a very low maternal mortality rate. From 1966 to 1989, abortions were made illegal and maternal mortality increased more than tenfold compared to the rest of Europe” (“Abortion Statistics”). This quote shows that if abortion were made legal the maternal mortality rate would decrease instead of increase over the years. (“Abortion”)Many women get…half the card…instead of eliminating it completely, they should create rules and enforce them as much as possible. Abortion has its pros and cons, but everyone should trust that women are capable of weighing every factor and choosing what is best. Abortion should remain legal and easily accessible for all women because it will put them at ease mentally knowing they have a choice, to show the world that they are equal to everyone else and that they are capable of making their own choices. This is a nationwide topic that no one seems to really be getting a handle on. The government should never be able to make decisions for other people's bodies despite having another body within it. If abortion were legalized, there would be fewer than 68,000 maternal deaths per year and women would be happier. All in all, there is only one key thing here and that is to let women choose.
