Ancient Greek Women In ancient Greek society, women lived difficult lives due to the communities built by the male patriarch. Women were treated like property. Until about adolescence the girl was "owned" by her father or lived with his family. Once married, the girl was owned by her husband along with all her possessions. A teenage girl in ancient Greece would marry a 30-year-old man she had probably never met before. Many men perceived women not as human beings but as creatures created to bear children, please men, and fulfill their domestic duties. A bride was not even considered a member of the family until she produced her first child. In addition to having a child, which is a difficult and painful task for a teenage girl in ancient civilization, the husband can decide whether he wants the child. A child was left outside to die if the husband was not satisfied with it; usually this was because the child was ill, looked different, or was a girl. Women had very few rights, they lived like prisoners, serving men 24 hours a day. Women have been protected by society, confined to their husbands and homes, crying out for help and justice, but there is no one there to hear their screams. In the play Antigone when the title character had to sneak out of the house to meet Ismene. Ancient Greek men ruled much like protective fathers ruled their teenage daughters. Men were also afraid that women would gain confidence and start thinking for themselves or, worse, acting or speaking against men, as in the play Antigone where Antigone confronts Creon by burying Polyneices after Creon strictly stated that no one buried him. If anyone buried him, the entire Polis would stone him to death. When Creon discovered that someone had buried Polyneices, he didn't even think that it could have been a woman who had done it. Why were women treated like animals? Greek society would not function without women, everything a man needs for a proper life, food, clothing, wealth, sex, the continuation of human existence were all traits that women investigated. However, women are also highly sexual beings who could overwhelm, hypnotize and stimulate the minds and soles of men. Likewise in modern society, where many men have lost their families, jobs, money and lives due to sexual addiction.
