Students said they will not speak or ask questions in some teachers' classes because the teacher does not respect their talk or questions. In those classrooms, students sit quietly while the teacher speaks and the students simply listen. These teachers lack a great teaching tool, speaking. A classroom should be filled with appropriate speech from everyone. Another curriculum practice I use with students I call “Silent Sustained Writing” (SSW). During the SSW students are given a writing prompt and then asked to write in an expository style about the discrepant question, situation, or event presented. The time period for writing is usually timed. The writing prompt can be very general or specific in nature. Students' writings are evaluated with a written test
