Reading has been a source of knowledge, happiness, pleasure and even moral courage at all times and in every era. In today's world, with so much to know and learn and with the need for conscious effort to overcome divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In ancient times, if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in religious preaching and oral tradition. The practice of telling stories before going to bed compensated to some extent for the lack of reading. In the 19th century, Victorian families used to gather together for an hour or so in the evening and listen to books read aloud. But today we not only read, we also want to read more and more and keep up with the events happening around us. The various speed reading courses and lessons support this belief.
