In the cold and dark pages of Moby Dick hides evil, an evil that takes the name of humanity. Humanity gnashes its teeth in the face of nature and its peers through character development and a tightly woven plot. Diving into the characters and the author, the motivations of these individuals are shown clearly through the murky water. Herman Melville's motivations help illuminate his reasoning behind each example of human traits throughout the book. His motivations are driven towards the dark side of humanity, also known as the anti-transcendental. In these ways, humans are believed to show evil through their actions. Melville exemplifies this belief in the book. The characters are also involved in the belief of anti-transcendental philosophy. The story shows how each character acts with nature and with others. Many whalers must protect the boat and protect each other as they navigate wild tides and horrible weather conditions.
